Gel vs Acrylic Nails: Which Should You Choose?

In this article

Walk into any nail salon and the first question you'll be asked is the one that trips most people up: gel or acrylic? They're often spoken about in the same breath, but they're genuinely different services that suit different hands, habits and budgets. Here's a clear, no-jargon breakdown so you can walk in knowing exactly what you want.

What's the actual difference?

Gel is a polish-like product painted onto your natural nail and then cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp. It follows the shape of your own nail and gives a glossy, natural-looking finish.

Acrylic is a sculpted product, made by mixing a liquid and a powder into a paste that's shaped over your nail (or a tip) and hardens in the open air. It's how you get added length and strength, and it can be built into almost any shape.

Look and feel

Gel tends to look and feel like a slightly thicker, glossier version of your natural nail — flexible, lightweight and subtle. Acrylic feels firmer and more robust, which is exactly why people reach for it when they want dramatic length or a bold sculpted shape. If your goal is a clean, everyday manicure, gel usually wins on naturalness. If you want statement nails, acrylic gives you more to work with.

Durability

Both are far tougher than regular polish. Gel typically holds its shine well and is a great choice if you like to change colours fairly often. Acrylic is prized for its strength and is harder to chip or snap, which makes it popular with anyone who's rough on their hands or wants their set to last through a few weeks of regrowth.

Removal and upkeep

Gel is usually soaked off in acetone, which is the gentler of the two processes when done properly. Acrylic generally takes longer to remove and, because it's a sturdier product, benefits from a careful professional removal rather than picking at it. Whichever you choose, both will need infills or a fresh set every few weeks as your natural nail grows out.

Cost

Prices vary by salon and design, but as a rule of thumb a classic gel manicure tends to sit at the more affordable end, while acrylic — especially with length, shaping and nail art — usually costs a little more because it's more labour-intensive.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose gel if you want a natural, glossy everyday look, you like changing colours often, and you prefer a quicker, gentler removal.
  • Choose acrylic if you want serious length or strength, a sculpted shape, or a set that stands up to a lot of wear.
