Dry, cracked heels and calloused feet are incredibly common — and very fixable at home. With a simple weekly routine you can get noticeably softer, smoother feet without a salon visit. Here's how.
Why feet get dry and calloused
Feet have very few oil glands, carry your full weight all day, and spend hours in shoes — so the skin thickens and dries out, especially on the heels. Friction and dry air make it worse.
Your at-home foot-care routine
1. Soak
Soak your feet in warm water for about 10 minutes to soften the skin — this makes everything that follows easier and gentler.
2. Buff away the rough skin
Use a foot file or an electric callus remover on dry or slightly damp skin. Work gently in small sections — little and often beats over-filing all at once.

3. Moisturize deeply
While skin is still slightly damp, massage in a rich foot cream or body lotion. For very dry heels, apply a thicker layer before bed.
4. Lock it in with socks
Pop on cotton socks after your night-time cream to seal in moisture while you sleep.
How to use an electric foot file safely
- Only use it on calloused areas — never on broken, sore or irritated skin.
- Keep it moving; don't hold it in one spot.
- Stop once skin feels smooth — you don't need to remove everything in one session.
- Always moisturize straight after.
